HCID PhD Student Linda Berube successfully passed her Viva!

Her thesis is titled “Digital Comics Ecosystems: Investigating creation, publishing, consumption, and communication practices”. The dissertation has a story to tell about how people in their daily lives interact with their digital ‘companions’—smartphones, tablets, laptops, PCs—to create, publish, and read digital comics as well as communicate through them. These stories are not often told from the perspective of the people, the makers—in this instance, UK creators, publishers, readers.

The purpose of the research is not only to understand the processes themselves, but to address the larger research problem of how to contextualize them within a wider digital ecosystem that can be comics-based but often is not. It is more specifically about how UK makers through the digital comics ecosystem use comics and non-comics platforms to make and live in their own personalized digital ecosystems.
